Perya a Fashion Show by Happy Andrada.
Perya (Spanish for fair or a circus) is the Filipino slang for small carnivals that are set up during fiestas. When going to the perya, one will find the traditional rides like the carousel and Ferris wheel, popcorn and cotton candy stands, a shooting gallery, and the occasional side shows that exploit people with disabilities and abnormalities (referred to as "freak shows").
Traditional perya is a thing of the past and it is no longer to be found in Manila.
On March 6, 2009 I went to a spectacular fashion show dubbed as "Perya: A Whimsical Fashion Gala and Benefit Show" by fashion designer Happy Andrada.
Happy Andrada.
Happy Andrada.
I was impressed by the talent of Happy Andrada and the fashion show was world class.
Inspired by Betsey Johnson as well as Christian Lacroix, Happy Andrada, a graduate of fashion design from Lasalle College International, showcased a 50 piece couture avant garde collection at the A. Venue Hotel Hall in Makati.
Crafted with quality, the collection showcased different characters from a perya like the woman who eats live chickens; or the half-woman, half-fish; Siamese twins and more.
The collection is filled with vibrant colours, with different treatments, silhouettes and paintings on clothes. From street wear, cocktail wear to even bridal gowns, her fashion lines displayed in her two shops, F*ART (fashion art) in QC and in One Beauty Center in San Juan, distinctively reveal her style marked by Geometric Designs and Complicated Construction.
Happy collaborated with creative people who also excel in their fields. They were as follows: Paolo Icasas of Happy Days (graphic art), Dennis Celestial (accessories), Hat Momma (hats), Maverick by Design (illuminators), Schu (shoes), Darrel Pobre (photography), DJ Funk Avy (music), I.N.K. Illustrador Ng Kabataan (art), Lomo Manila (vintage photography), Ony Carcamo (ventriloquist), Viva Andrada and Versa-Vise productions (digital film).
A portion of the sales went to the following charities: Hands on Manila, Bethany House Sto. Niño Orphanage and Vides.
Happy Andrada is for sure someone to follow and who has a golden future ahead of her.
